How Can You Travel to Bhutan?

Traveling by air is the easiest mode of transportation to reach Bhutan. At present there are four landing stripes across the kingdom but other than Paro rest of three are not operated on regular basis. With the advent of Bhutan Airlines (Pvt.) today Druk Air & Bhutan Airlines are the only passenger Airlines in the country. Druk Air is the national air bus of Bhutan, and it operates flights from India; New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Gaya, Bagdogra & Guwahati and these places is connected with Domestic Indian Carrier with almost all parts of India. By Road

Another convenient and cheaper way to get into Bhutan is by land. There are three entry points mostly used while entering Bhutan i.e. Phuentsholing, Gelephu & Samdrup Jongkhar. For your information, Phuentsholing is closer to Hasimara, Alipurdwar, and Jalpaiguri & Siliguri. Likewise, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar are near to Guwahati. Therefore, we recommend our travelers from India to use this information’s to get into Bhutan in the shortest manner possible. Please be informed that apart from VISA there are other formalities to be looked upon while entering to Bhutan. Therefore, while traveling with us you need not worry much as our job is to make your travel a complete leisure. Travel Insurance

You should not travel internationally without travel insurance. The Royal Insurance Corporation of Bhutan has initiated a travel and medical plan solely for our visitors. Travel insurance can be provided through your Bhutanese tour operator or international partner. You may also visit the Royal Insurance Corporation of Bhutan website at www.ricb.com.bt for more information. The Government set package tariff do not include any Travel Insurance. It is imperative that tourists have full comprehensive insurance cover to protect against unforeseen accidents and mishaps. The insurance policy should adequately cover baggage and travel delays etc., helicopter evacuation, transportation and medical assistance in case of treks.

Visa Formality for International Travellers

With the exception of visitors from India, Bangladesh and Maldives, all other visitors to Bhutan need a visa. Visa is required for traveling to Bhutan. Thus following are the requirements while applying for the visa.

  • Remittance Copy (Full tour payment) must be mailed prior to your arrival date.
  • Clearly filled VISA FORM must be send to us or provide us with the information’s
  • Full Name, Permanent Address, Nationality, Date & Place of Birth, Profession / Occupation, Passport Number, Date of Issue, Place of Issue, Date of Expiry or send us the photo page of your passport.
  • 4 copies of original passport size photograph are required on arrival.
  • Extra one time visa fee of 40$ is payable on arrival in cash at the point of entry or you can pay it prior to your host agent and make the arrangement accordingly.

Requirements

Valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity is must and failure to produce shall terminate your visa application. Once you are done submitting the visa application details, accordingly we will process your visa online and will immediately send you with the Visa clearance letter to purchase your air tickets and also to reconfirm your tour to Bhutan. However, your actual visa will be stamped on arrival.

Entry Permit for Regional Travellers

This is applicable only to Indian, Bangladeshis and Maldivian nationals. They are referred to as regional travelers. For regional clients they need not apply for VISA and neither are they subjected to Royalty nor VISA regulations. Indian, Bangladeshis and Maldivian nationals can obtain a visa at the port of entry on producing a valid passport with a minimum of 6 month validity, 04 numbers recent passport size photo, Children below 5 – requires birth certificate, children between 6 – 17 years, academic school identity card is required. Indian nationals may also use their Voters Identity Card (VIC) while processing their entry permit. For those who don’t have passport entry permit or the Visa processing cannot be done in advance as physical appearance of the travelers is required at the immigration office. However, government including Tourism Council of Bhutan is looking into ways to make the entry permit online meaning the permit can be obtained much ahead of the travel date through one of the certified tour operator in Bhutan.

Regarding the new currency Indian rupee 500 & 2000 denomination, there is no problem at all and you can use them throughout Bhutan. However, we urge you to carry 100, 200 and 500 denomination to avoid change problems. For your reference, ATM Machine is available across the kingdom but we always recommend you to check with your tour guide.

Customs

The following articles are exempt from duty.

  • Personal effects and articles for day to day use by the visitor.
  • 1 liter of alcohol (spirits or wine).
  • 200 cigarettes, on payment of import duty of 200%
  • Instruments, apparatus or appliances for professional use
  • Photographic equipment, video cameras and other electronic goods for personal use.

You have to complete the passenger declaration form at your port of entry. Visitors are advised to be cautious in purchasing old and used items, especially of religious or cultural significance, as such items may not be exported without a clearance certificate. If importing any items to Bhutan which are for sale or gift, they may be liable for customs duty.
On departure, visitors are required to fill out a departure form, which will be asked for by Customs authorities.

Import/export of the following goods is strictly prohibited:

  • Arms, ammunitions and explosives
  • All narcotics and drugs except medically prescribed drugs
  • Wildlife products, especially those of endangered species
  • Antiques
  • Imports of plants, soils etc. are subject to quarantine regulations. These items must be cleared on arrival.
